What is New Age Blast Media®?

New Age Blast Media® is an alternative 100% recycled glass sandblasting media that directly benefits the environment while eliminating the health risk of airborne carcinogens-giving a modernistic approach to sandblasting abrasives.

Recycled glass blasting media has been successfully substituted for silica sand and other blasting media in shipyard trials and in other construction projects and equipment cleaning. New Age Blast Media® competes with common abrasive alternatives as well as niche materials such as plastic pellets used on sensitive surfaces. Glass can be used as a dry blasting media or combined with water for use in slurry blasting.

In addition to worker safety benefits, New Age Blast Media® works great for sandblasting thick or soft coatings, aluminum, brass, bright metal, and "spot and sweep" applications.

Cleaner: New Age Blast Media® is manufactured from 100% Recycled Container Glass that directly helps reduce landfill waste and limits the use of more toxic slags.  It is non-reactive and inert, and can be used near and around water.

Safer: New Age Blast Media's® dust is classified by OSHA/NIOSH as "nuisance" dust. Contains less than 1% free silica unlike most coal slags and has virtually none of the OSHA identified Heavy/Toxic Metals associated with slags and some other mineral abrasives.

Silica sand blast media in its natural state has a crystalline structure that has the capacity of “sticking” to lung tissues.  Our recycled glass blast media is amorphous with a closed structure that doesn’t absorb anything and doesn’t physically stick to tissues. If a person is exposed to amorphous glass fines or dust, the body can expectorate the dust as it would any other type of natural dirt.

Faster: New Age Blast Media's® crushed glass delivers a natural, whiter metal finish that many other sandblasting abrasives. Significantly less embedment issues—up to 5 times less than slag blast media. Crushed glass blast media's dust is translucent, which allows for increased visibility and operator production!

Baltimore Sun Exposes Beryllium in Coal & Copper Slag!
OSHA Confirms They Are Investigating the Manufacturers!

"Contaminants in coal and copper slag pose risks, critics say"

By Timothy B. Wheeler, The Baltimore Sun

February 26 2012, 6:05 PM EST

“The Occupational Safety and Health Administration says coal and copper slag contain traces of highly toxic beryllium, arsenic and other contaminants. Federal regulators are investigating
whether manufacturers of the blasting grit have provided adequate notice that users could be inhaling
potentially harmful substances.  "When these abrasives are used in blasting, measured exposure levels to
workers could exceed OSHA permissible exposure limits," OSHA spokesman Jesse Lawder said. Federal regulations require listing harmful substances in "material safety data sheets" which are supposed to alert employees to the risks involved with products they're dealing with in the workplace.

Public Citizen calls on OSHA to enforce beryllium law
January 20, 2012

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) should enforce a law requiring manufacturers of coal slag abrasive to disclose that their product contains dangerous levels of beryllium, Public Citizen said in a letter sent yesterday to OSHA enforcement director Thomas Galassi. Workers use coal slag abrasive to blast ship hulls, bridges and other metal structures in preparation for painting.

"
Workers have a right to know if they are being exposed to toxic chemicals," said Justin Feldman, worker health and safety advocate with Public Citizen's Congress Watch division. "But coal slag manufacturers are not indicating that their product contains cancer-causing beryllium. Some companies even have the audacity to market their product as non-toxic. OSHA needs to enforce the law and end this practice at once."
